Welcome to my new site & personal project! The inspiration that moved me forward to make such a commitment in time & effort is a little known Latin prayer book published in the 16th century by Cardinal Joseph Dominick von Lamberg of Passau, Austria – then part of the Holy Roman Empire.  The work, titled in Latin is:

OFFICIA PIETATIS CHRISTIANÆ ERGA DEUM ET SANCTOS IN OCTO PARAGRAPHOS DISTRIBUTA ET AD USUM QUOTIDIANUM CHRISTI FIDELIUM IMPRESSA

This wonderful prayer book – to my knowledge – has never been translated into the English language, unfortunately.  My rendering of the title in English is as follows:

The Duty of Pious Christians Toward God & the Saints, Divided into Eight Sections – Printed for the Everyday Use of the Christian Faithful.

During the Third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday [on 11 December 2016], I chose the domain Pietatis.org and purchased the Premium plan from WordPress, marking the first step in getting this project off the ground. This is just the beginning and after two days, I have made some good progress.

By the way, here’s the Introit from Gaudete Sunday:

Admittedly, I have much work ahead of me.  Thusly, please in your charity,  pray for me –  that I may continue to labor unceasingly to bring this work to completion in Godspeed and that sloth loses its ever present grip upon me.

To start reading the prayer book in Latin, and see my progress thus far, select OFFICIA PIETATIS  from the main site menu or click here for the Index Generalis.  Each listing in the index that has a completed section has a hyper-link that will take you directly to the section of interest.

Once I get the whole work up on the site in Latin, I’ll start working on the translation into English.

*Update 17  December 2016: I started a modest translation… see this recent post.

I have written a general preface in English that you may find of some utility – simply click here for my PRÆFATIO GENERALIS which I originally wrote for the Kindle version and have since edited for this site.

Lastly, please be patient… I am working on the formatting of the pages of the Officia Pieatatis. The WordPress editor is primitive. Unfortunately, copying the text from Microsoft Word to their editor does not maintain many of the formatting elements.  Therefore, I am left at this point editing the HTML directly which is inefficient.

*Update: 18 December 2016 – I have posted two additional sections of the Officia Pietatis:

§. IV.Orationes Jaculatoriæ S. Carolo Borromæo, aliisque familiares, ex psalmis collect, sæpe de die cum magna fiducia in deum dicendæ, et Usurpandæ.

§. V.Præparatio Ad confessionem Sacramentalem rite peragendam.

Put more work into the translation and came up with a functional translation of the Actus Fidei:

Oh my God! My Everything! – The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  — In your Divine Majesty,  I humbly prostrate myself before you.

I firmly believe with my whole heart, all that is proclaimed in the Creed of the Apostles — everything you have said, revealed, and placed before me through your Church – the Catholic Church.

I believe without doubt, because You are the fullness of Truth & Wisdom — and thusly, are unable to deceive.  Before all rational beings, you have said it is enough that I am prepared to sacrifice my blood and life in witness to my Faith.  Here, behold I offer You a portion of my heart!

Oh my God!  Please give assistance in my doubt — For Your Word, Lord remains forever in eternity.

I am sure I could use some correction… and some polish.  But there it is…

*Update 23 December 2016 – I have completed uploading the entire corpus of Officia Pietatis, and have been able to match rather closely the formatting of the original work for the the pages preceding the 3rd section of the book. I have added a couple of blog posts, since my last update – the lastest published this evening is entitled, Why Learn Latin – From the Obvious & Beyond. You can read it here.

Gratia tibi ago!
