Cardinal Joseph Dominick von Lamberg was born on July 8, 1680 from a family in Styria, Austria. The nephew of Cardinal Johann Philipp von Lamberg Compì. He completed his studies in Besançon in France and in Siena by 1694 at the College of Clementino in Rome. Ordained a priest, he became a canon in the cathedral of Passau in 1699 when his uncle was bishop. Here he was elevated to Vicar General in
November of 1703 and Provost in 1704. Later he became a canon of the cathedral chapter of Salzburg in 1706. He became a bishop of Passau on 11 February 1719. Then a cardinal priest in the consistory of December 20, 1737 – yet he did not take part in the conclave of 1740 that elected Pope Benedict XIV. Later he received his title in San Pietro, Montorio on 16 September 1740. He did not take part in the conclave of 1758 that elected Pope Clement XIII. On August 30, 1761, he died in the bishop’s palace of Passau. His remains were exposed in the cathedral town and later buried in a crypt in the mausoleum that they had built for him. His heart lies in an urn on the altar of the church of Himmelfahrt.
